SWAGING

Select the proper die set, as advised in the machine user manual. The diameter of the die set must be as close as possible to the required swaging dimension (each machine manufacturer suggest the proper die set according to the required swaging diameter). The use of an inappropriate die set causes a non uniform deformation and compression, which could generate cracking of the ferrule.

Set the swage setting on the machine slightly higher than the required value, swage the first assembly and check the diameter through two 90° gauge measurements. Check the swage diameter slightly over the middle of the ferrule. The swage must be uniform on the whole circumference with a maximum variation of 0.2 mm. The measured swage diameter has to be the same as the value advised on the crimping table (including possible tolerance). If the value is not correct, proceed with 0.1mm increases until you reach the desired value. Proceed with the swaging of the ferrule on the other side of the assembly and check once again the crimping diameter.

If a second swage is necessary to reach the optimal value, be sure that the dies are lined up with the previous swaging Marks.

NOTE:
double swaging is a critical operation that should be avoided when possible; when necessary it has to be performed with great care.
Finally check the swage both at the base and at the beginning of the ferrule. A difference of more than 0,3 mm between the two crimping values means a conical swaging. In such a case check the machine and the dies to identify for any possible abnormality and begin swaging from the beginning.

CHECK OF THE COLLAPSE

The recommended swage value should ensure the correct hose compression and fitting deformation. The collapse of the fitting indirectly indicates the hose compression. It is always recommended to check the collapse of the fitting through appropriate go-no go gauges.
